The long wait is over...the Peace Dale Library is reopening to the public on Monday April 13th!  We are so excited to welcome you back into our main building, with a few notes:

  • The building is still an active construction site, and as such, there may be:
    • Noise
    • Dust
    • Some areas may be unavailable
    • Some services may be limited or unavailable
  • Meeting Room & Conference Room booking is currently unavailable

  • Peace Dale will remain closed on Saturdays to support additional construction efforts.
  • Kingston and Hale will return to their regular hours, with one exception:
    • Hale will open on Saturdays 9am-5pm to balance out Peace Dale being closed on Saturdays
  • The Annex at the Peace Dale Office Building has served us well, but it will close on Friday April 3rd at 1pm.  (All locations of the South Kingstown Public Library will be closing at 1pm for Good Friday)
    • No Annex services will available after that date while we prepare for Peace Dale to reopen to the public.
The project is going well, and we are excited to reach this milestone in which we can welcome our public back into the building. We hope to see you soon.

  • With the upcoming temporary closure of Peace Dale, patrons who pick up holds at Peace Dale will need to update their pick up location to another branch. Starting December 1st, holds will no longer be able to be placed for pick-up at the Peace Dale Library. We will accept holds in transit up until Friday, December 12th. The last day to pick up holds will be Friday, December 19th. After this date, holds will no longer be available to pick up at Peace Dale. There are a few options for what you can do:
    • Change the pick-up location of your hold to another library (Both the branches, Kingston Free and Robert Beverly Hale, will have extended hours)
    • Suspend your holds: Keep your spot on the hold list and just wait until we reopen to get your holds!

Overview

The Community Learning Center project aims to enhance the existing Peace Dale Library facility, providing robust public internet access, digital navigation assistance, programmatic education support, workforce preparedness assistance, and educational health programming and services. CLC programming will be offered by the library through consistently scheduled sessions and on-demand appointments that cover various topics, including resume creation, job search assistance, career planning and health education.

The CLC project is focused on serving the needs of the community and as such we are reaching out to our community stakeholders to hear how this new resource can best help you and those you serve. We would be pleased to work with you to offer programming in partnership to support our community’s goals.

Community Input

The Peace Dale Library has hosted 3 community input sessions, focus groups, tabled at community events, presented at a Board of Trustees meeting, and conducted a survey.  We are very thankful to everyone who has already shared your thoughts and ideas on how we can make this area a useful and well-thought-out resource for our community.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
How will this project be paid for?
This project is being supported, in whole or in part, by federal award number CPFFN00169 awarded to the State of Rhode Island by the U.S. Department of Treasury. This is a Learn365RI initiative of the Office of Governor Dan McKee.
This project is supported in part by federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Fiscal Year 2024 Economic Development Initiative Community Project Funding, awarded through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024, with the support of Senator Jack Reed and Representative Seth Magaziner.
When will renovations start? Renovations began on September 15th 2025.
Will this make the parking problems worse? Plans to improve parking are included in our scope plans.
Will the Library lose the beautiful woodwork in the course of renovation? No, in fact, more of the beautiful woodwork will be exposed!  Currently the amazing ceiling woodwork is covered by the drop ceiling, which is planned to be removed to expose soaring, beautiful beamwork.
Will the Library be closed during renovations? The need for partial or full closure will be evaluated along the way.
Update September 29th 2025: The Peace Dale Library will be closed Saturday October 18th as part of the renovation process.  The library will return to normal hours on Monday October 20th.
When is the CLC expected to be complete? The Community Learning Center expects to be open to the public and providing services and programming in mid 2026
What will the purpose of the Community Learning Center be? The major areas of focus for the Community Learning Center will be health, education, and workforce skills and services.
Can I share my programming ideas for the CLC? Absolutely, we would love to hear from you!  Keep an eye on this page for upcoming Community Outreach Events or contact us directly by Clicking Here
What happened to the nonfiction section?  Our nonfiction collection recently went through a deep weeding process to remove materials in poor condition or with very low circulation. At the same time, we are preparing for renovations to create the Community Learning Center, which requires reclaiming some floor space. Finally, reading and research habits have shifted—many people now turn to digital resources such as eBooks, Google, and YouTube for learning, especially in nonfiction. As a result, our collection is smaller, but better reflects both current use and future needs.
Update Sept. 29th 2025 - The Nonfiction Collection has now been packed up and moved into storage for the duration of the renovation project.  A small selection of new nonfiction titles are still available.
Where are the newspapers? For the duration of the renovation project, the newspapers have been moved to the circular table between the Reference and Circulation desks.  We will continue to keep a week's worth of issues out for reading.
Will we be losing seating and table space? During the renovation there will be fewer tables and seating areas available, but the Library will make our best efforts to accommodate all who wish to use the space during this time. Once the project is complete, the Community Learning Center will feature even more tables, additional seating, and new reservable private spaces for study, work, and collaboration.
